Do you guys ever send back food?

As I sit here in the Gainesville Airport (I’m sure you are reading my tweets, since that’s the only way anyone would know about this genius blog), I am 1, EXTREMELY BORED, and 2, thinking about a terrible meal I had the other day at a place called Chom-Chom on 56th between 5th and 6th Ave.

I literally just ordered some chicken strips at this airport that were infinitely better than anything I ordered there. I kept ordering things too, like a fool who couldn’t really believe that in this completely competitive business, with restaurants shutting down all over the city daily, this new york restaurant, that wasn’t some sort of carry-out/delivery joint, could care SO LITTLE about their food.

First, I had some shitty tuna sashimi salad. A SALAD. Fucking up a salad just…boggles my mind. Watery, old veggies, watery and flavorless dressing, and served to me with such confidence that it made me even angrier. So naturally I ordered more. (Dumbass)

Ok I know it’s just a shitty iphone picture, but can you guys even tell what is this is?? Grilled spicy shrimp? More like grilled lice-y gimps. I don’t even know what that means but whatever, you get my point.

Who serves crap like this with a smile on their face? By the time I even pried any kind of meat out of the shells, they were already shredded to bits with patches of glassy peels. And what was spicy about these? There was no hint of any kind of spicy sauce, and they were dry as a bone.

AND THEN I ORDERED AGAIN. Grilled spicy chicken and veggies. Chicken = frozen inside. Veggies with no seasoning at all.

Anyhow, going off on this restaurant isn’t the point of this post, although I do hope you never go, hehe, but to say: I can’t believe a food lover such as myself has NEVER sent anything back.

I know…I’m so outspoken on twitter, right? But there is some weird part of me that just feels terrible sending something back at a restaurant, whether it’s a glass of wine that is clearly sour, or a disgusting meal like the one above. Want to know something extra disturbing? I will even ask for it to-go so I don’t have to deal with the waiter saying “Oh, did you not like it?”…then I throw it away outside.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?

Even when I DO love a meal, I will give whatever is left on my plate from it (I get full pretty quickly) to John because I don’t want the half-eaten plate to get back to the chef and have him think that I didn’t like it or think I have poor taste in food or something.

I’d like to know why I do this. Clearly I am doing a disservice to the restaurant by NOT saying anything. Maybe it’s the fact it is my worst nightmare to ever be personally told that my food was inedible. I would cry. And I’m being serious.

What about you, do you guys return food? Or do you feel icky about it like me?

      I only send things back that are undercooked and pose a health risk- chicken. I have never sent things back because of taste. One of my sons sends things back often- temp not perfect, taste, maybe a bit too “toasted”, had a tomato on it and asked for none- couldnt he just pick it off?? I find what he does embarrassing.

    i do that too – I’ll fuss about how awful the food is but I won’t send it back because I don’t want to hurt the chef’s feelings or make anyone angry. but I’ll sit there, angry, that my food isn’t right. We aren’t doing the restaurant a service. If they don’t know the food isn’t any good, how are they going to get better?

    I never send food back. I am worried what they might do to it if I do. I either eat it, or eat around it. If the server or manager comes by and ask how it was, I will tell them I didn’t like it if I didn’t eat it. But if I have food that bad, I make sure I never go there again.

    I do not. I worked at a restaurant when I was young. You never know what might happen to your next dish of food if you do this. Catch someone in a bad mood and something may “slip off” your new plate of food only to be picked up from the floor and returned to the plate before being served to you. Perhaps this only happened where I worked though….

    I never return food, either, but only because of fear that the cook in the back will do something horrible to it.

    Now, if it’s the last time you go there, then sending back the food and then leaving is another option.

    I have never sent a meal back either! ONE time, the waiter came by and noticed the diguested look on my face and took it back for me. But, even then I felt really bad. Stupid, I know.

    Never sent anything back. Shit, I never even let bad food affect my tip. It’s like buying produce- you’re taking the risk with a new restaurant. The best you can do is not return.

      I tip for the service, not the food quality. It is rarely the fault of the server if food is lousy.

      I have never sent food back, but I have sent a beer back if it tastes off.

    I never send anything back… As I’m sure they’d give me the special sauce ( picture a runny nose and them trying to cough it up). But if they ask I will tell them it was lousy..

    I rarely send things back because I’m a server and I’m too nice. My brother, however, different story. Just the other night his server raved about their twice baked potatoes. Turns out it was indeed horrible and unacceptable. He took clean utensils and sliced off an untouched part of the potato and called the server over & said “I encourage you to try this and tell me if you will recommend it again”. Server’s face was priceless after trying it and whisked it away immediately. I know when something is bad or not fresh and I won’t take it to a table if it isn’t prepared properly. Nor will I recommend something that I know isn’t tasty. However, when someone orders a spicy dish I always warn them. I want to kill them when they send it back because it’s too spicy. I don’t think my company should take the loss for douchebag diners like that.

    As a restaurant owner there is nothing more frustrating than not receiving truthful feedback from customers. Most people find it easier to not speak up & just never come back again. You would be doing a great service to the restaurant if you did speak up when something isn’t right. Speaking for myself it is more important for the customer to be happy than worry about a bruised ego in the kitchen. I would bet the majority of restauranteurs would feel the same way.

    I had a similar experience a few weeks ago. A fomer co-worker and I met to have lunch and catch up. I ordered a seafood dish, which included lobster. (I had lobster from Luke’s Lobster a couple days before and wanted more lobster.) Big mistake. The lobster at this national chain was horrific. Don’t get me wrong, it was appealing to the eye–unlike the food contained in the picture you posted. But the smell and taste, OMG. It was terrible. It was all I could do take two bites of the stuff. No matter, I soldiered through, eating the other seafood offerings and bypassing the lobster. I should have returned the food, but I didn’t. And this experience comes on the heels of another bad restaurant experience I had at Union Station, an experience that necessitated my returning the god-awful breakfast that I was served. In fact, it was so bad that the waitress glady took the food back and offered to give me another dish free of charge. I declined, believing that the new dish would be exactly like the first one, shitty.

    I’m done bitching. Enjoy your time in Gainesville, and I hope your new puppy (Pippa, is it?) was worth the effort your expended. Dueces.

    I have only sent back food ONCE, and it was at an O’Charley’s. The bread on my sandwich was literally rock solid. Also, this is the same O’Charley’s which once served a family friend bleach instead of water. (She sued).

      O’Charley’s is the only place I ever really complained about their food. Something in the seasoning that they use on their steak tasted like rotten meat to me. But we kept going back for the sweet tea and cheddar wedges. :)

    I was a waitress for 6 years and if we genuinely served you a shit product I was more than happy to take it back…if you were nice about it. If a customer was a douche about it my manager and I generally chose to do nothing so they wouldn’t come back. So I say sure send it back we are more than happy to help if the customer is nice about it! Woot!

    Hi Chrissy!!
    I eat in the city a lot. It’s become sort of a hobby to try new placea and then review them on NY Mag. I rarely feel guilty about sending back something I don’t like. Food brings me pleasure, and I can’t stand the thought of having bad memoriea of what should have been a good dining experience. The few timea that I suck it up and eat or just stare at food I dont like I always regret after. True, some places dont really care what we think of their food (i.e., Pastis) but most places do want you to genuinely enjoy thier food and come back! The moral of the story is to let the chef try to rectify the dish and to leave happy from most dining experiences! I have no shame, my friends are sometimea mortified, but if it’s not good I’m more than likely saying something! When the waiter asks, “how is everything?” I’m ready with my answer!

    if u want to test the niceness of gainesvillians(?), throw out a good ol , go seminoles and a tomohawk chop for their biggest rivalry school. and i never return food because the confrontation with servers who are treated badly by others, makes me itchy. enjoy pippa!

    I understand why you’re like that, Chrissy. You can call me any name in the book, but if I hear that my food sucked, I would be so insulted. I never send my food back for two reasons. I don’t want people screwing with my food. I remember how pissed Chefs got when I served a table who sent back food(back in the way back days!)This one gentleman asked a coworker to put his Rib-eye in a to go box, and she accidentally trashed it. She was scared that they were going to deduct $50 from her that evening, so the bitch went into the garbage can for the steak and boxed it for him! Don’t ever send your food back, or let people box your food in the back.

      Also, if you don’t like the food or service, you can always write a review. That’s what I do…and again, restaurant owners get pissy as hell. Some of them are nice, but majority have been complete assholes.

    fuck yeah, i send food back if its horrible. i’m not that kind of particular jerk who always sends food back if its not perfect, but if you serve me vomit, i’ll politely let you know that its vomit.
    i once ordered some dish when i was in New Orleans and they served me grocery store spiral noodles. nothing else. no sauce, no nothing. I asked the server to come over and asked him if this was some kind of joke.

    i think that 75% of people who open restaurants don’t care about the food they serve. they just do it to (try to) make money

    I was once with coworkers at 5 Ninth. I had heard the food was great but soon found out that the seafood risotto was not… I understand that risotto is a tricky dish but it shouldn’t be on the menu if the chef can’t handle it. I would never have sent it back but an outspoken coworker had ordered the same thing and complained, leaving me to choose sides once the waiter asked if mine needed to be returned to the kitchen also. I felt bad for the chef but don’t see him for 40 hours a week, so I agreed with my coworker, ordered something else (and different from what she picked) and it was worse. I ate it.

    I hate sending food back but have done it a few times only when it is just sooo obviously bad that the chef comes out to apologize …. it does give the restaurant a chance to redeem themselves (or spit in your food) ….
    I do hate going to dinner with that person who always has a problem with there food that’s horrible!
    But girl I am not drinking rank wine that just is a sin!

    I work in the restaurant business and my chef is a proud creature so, naturally, I assme that all chefs are the same. I probably bring one plate back every three months and most of the time it’s steak that is not cooked to the southerner’s well-done satisfaction. I hate sending food back– I feel disrespectful and pretentious. So, only if the dish is truly unbearable will I send it back.

      Oh, yes! I’m also a vegetarian who has had to send back meat that I didn’t order. Once recently I ordered a veggie burger and they sent me a chicken breast sandwich with bacon on it. Another time I ordered veggie fajitas and they sent me beef. ARGH. But other than that, I don’t send food back because I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings and I hate confrontation. Even when sending back a meat dish, I find myself apologizing: “I’m really sorry, but I ordered a vegetarian dish and I really can’t eat this because I don’t eat meat and I’m sorry to inconvenience you…” Sigh.

She will want to send something and have me be the person that explains everything..like I am the buffer between calm and all hell breaking loose. I used to try to complain about it, but no more..she likes what she likes..and she loves me, thus I do as asked..lol

    Having seen & heard what happens when you send something back (the shit that goes on in the kitchen w/ the cook) I don’t send it back but I ask for the manager & ask them if they would eat it. If I am required to pay I do so but I warn them that I will tell everyone I know to not go there. Either way I will never go back to that place again. But send it back – no way in hell.

    I have no problem sending food if say it was undercooked. I had an experience a few months ago where I was craving biscuits and gravy (mind you I was 3 months prego at the time). As I dug into my plate I realized it was bland and awful but I kept eating because I didn’t want to be the ass to send food back. I soon realized there was very little sausage in my biscuits and sausage gravy but still held my tongue and kept eating. Eventually I made my way to some sausage crumbles and ate them with excitement hoping that that is where all the flavor was. Once in my mouth I realized it was a tad mushy which is odd, I then decided to further examine the sausage and came to the sad realization that the sausage was indeed undercooked and very pink. I immediately stopped eating and asked my husband to look at my dish and he too said it was raw on the inside. I felt torn about speaking up but when the waitress came by to ask how things were going I shyly raised my hand and said that I thought the sausage was undercooked. She looked surprised and I felt worse because I thought maybe I was wrong and being picky. She immediately took the plate back to the kitchen and asked if there was anything else she could bring, at this point everyone was almost finished with their meals and I didnt want to hold things up so I declined and told her that it was okay to leave it on the bill. She returned a few minutes later with the manager and they actually thanked me for saying something. They said that they inspected the batch of gravy and indeed it was undercooked and they threw it out and started a fresh batch.

    I guess sometimes it’s better to have bruised egos than food poisoning.

    It’s all about the level of the restaurant you’re at. It sounds like the Chom Chom place maybe wasn’t the nicest in which case sending the food back isn’t necessarily “risky” but just futile. It’s not going to come out any better the second time at that type of establishment. You’re really just going to get lucky at a place like that. On the other hand if you dine at a very nice place or high end corporate place like Del Frisco’s if you send it back, it’s as if a red carpet of ass kissing is rolled out and they will do everything to ensure you’re satisfaction. I work at a Shulas Steakhouse and the idea that anything bad would happen to your food once it leaves the table is unfathomable. Unless you call me a faggot in which case I’m going to…well nevermind. If food is returned and the chef is of high quality, it’s a good thing…he’ll chastise whoever made the mistake and everyone benefits. Plus you can most likely attain some sort of complimentary dessert or beverage to resolve the issue.

    Send food back. Just be nice about it. Then when you tip well, the server learns from the situation as well.Don’t assume shit has hit the fan when a dish isn’t liked, just do what you can to make the patron happy. It’s win win for all.

    I think it has something to do with being a girl who was raised to always be polite, and not to make anyone feel bad about themselves, but I have a hard time sending back food, too! Not only do I not want something horrible to happen to whatever they would bring me out instead, but I also don’t want to seem high maintenance. I even eat things I flat out did not order sometimes! I definitely think that there is a way to send back food that isn’t objectionable to those who prepared it, and I agree that a lot of restraunteurs would probably like to know they are serving sub-par food, but I just can’t bring myself to do it!

    I worked the service industry through college and would encourage guests to speak up about the quality of food, then do my best to accommodate. Doing so was damage control on my part because unfortunately the server is the face to go with the problem and my gratuity likely would suffer. Just like anything else in life, if you aren’t an asshole and are polite about your complaint, go for it. You have the right as a paying guest to food that’s up to your standards.

    Its all from something in your childhood. For example as kids we had ten people to feed and only enough money for five BigMacs. The solution was ordering five whoppers with no onion at the drive through and five minutes later calling the manager and telling them that they put onions on the big stacks! We then returned with the reciept and recieved our other 5 steakburgers with no onion. We did this everyday untill we beat the dead horse to a pulp and they knew all our faces. So , yup. If my steak has a blue stamp on it from the butcher they are getting me a new one and I make it a wonderful scene. Thats my excuse LOL

    Don’t feel bad about sending it back! Chefs are professionals, and you’re not (but I’m sure your cooking still rocks). If they are putting ass on a plate and calling it dinner, the only way another customer won’t get the same shitty type of meal you did is by correcting. If someone said something you cooked wasn’t good because of “a, b, and c” (let’s hope there aren’t that many reasons), it might suck and make you want to shove it down their throat as you smile diabolically, but it DOES make you a better chef.

    Disappointing food is part of the inherent risk you take trying new places. We’ve all seen people complain to get over on the bill and I don’t think any self-aware person wants that to be assumed of them or come across unreasonably picky. If you can eat it, you power through, take the L and move on.

    In regards to owners wanting feedback most the time it not something I care deeply enough about to make a scene and if the food was bad to the point where it offends my sensibilities I assume the place is a lost cause anyways. Anyone who opens and runs a restaurant should have enough working knowledge to know if they’re serving up crap. It’d be a bit of a douche move to assume otherwise.

    Only time I would send it back is if it was inedible, which it sounds like your chicken may have been. Why did you order more though?!! That pic of the shrimp clearly says cut your losses and run for the hills.

    I don’t usually send food back because I’m too chicken and don’t like to cause a scene. Only one time have I ever sent something back at Macaroni Grill because there were legit shards of steel wool in my macaroni! The manager blamed it on the packaging from vegetables, but I don’t care where it came from, why the hell is it in my pasta?? My throat could have been ripped to shreds.

    I might possibly send my steak back if it’s overcooked because I like my steak raw. That sounds dirty.

I immediately want to “politely” put my hand over there mouth n tell the waiter they dont kno what they were talking about ….. N maybe it was the extra drink talking! Lol it just makes me feel so uncomfortable!

I’d hate to cause a scene BUT if it really was bad I’d politely mention something. I mean come on! I’m sure the restaurant would like to know if the food they’re dishing out is bad.

    I’ve been a waitress fir five years, glamerous I know, I absolutely don’t mind if people return food back they don’t like…. And I’ve never seen anyone in the back do something shady to food. Going out to eat should be fun and enjoyable, if you dont like your meal change it so your not dissapointed all night!

    I work at a restaurant and get frustrated when someone orders something they’ve never tried before and then send it back because they don’t like it (like we have a calypso style shrimp dish with mango chutney – if you don’t like mangos – don’t order it!) . Now, if the dish is prepared incorrectly then oh yeah, send it back! And if it’s just plain poorly made then absolutely send it back. ALSO if there’s an ingredient that you despise and it wasn’t in the description – send it back! But if it was in the description….grr, that bothers me. READ PEOPLE, read. But anyway, don’t stress out about sending items back, you’re paying for it, you should enjoy it! (Though I rarely send things back either… unless the server told me the dish was vegetarian and it comes out with pancetta…oooo)

      Completely agree! I have worked in hospitality for 8 years and have zero problem with customers sending food back when there is something genuinely wrong with it or if it not what they asked for. Any GOOD chef would also not have a problem with having something sent back for those reasons. I have never experienced a chef doing something revolting to a customers food in ‘revenge’ and I have worked with some pretty jerky chefs.

      My advice is to immediately send something back if it is not up to the standard you expected. Chances are your waiter will agree with you and will be just as embarrassed about it as you are.

    I was once taken out on a date to Applebees (seriously?!?) and ordered a steak. It was horrific. Totally black burnt on the bottom, no seasoning or flavor. Slight grey color. I took a bite, and made my date taste it as well just to be sure it was THAT bad. I tried to send it back but was shamed by the waitress because I ate “some of it”. I was totally calm and polite about it. She refused to take it back, and wouldnt get her manager for me to speak with. I tracked him down and complained. Worst dining experience I’ve had. We didn’t have to pay for my steak, but they made no offer to refire the steak or even cook me something else. It was as if I annoyed them by speaking up…. But it won’t stop me from sending something back now if it is unedible.

    It’s pretty rare that I send something back, but bad food is bad food, and they’re providing a service and taking your money, so you should have every right to send something back that is cooked completely wrong or tastes awful. I’m always very polite about it to the server. NEVER–I repeat, NEVER–act like a jerk to the server about it. It’s not their fault, and if you do act like a jerk, well, I hope you like spit in your food. Ever seen the movie, Waiting? If not, I highly suggest it, because a lot of what happens in that movie is very true. I’ve worked in restaurants, as well as many of my friends, and they don’t take kindly to rude customers. I’ve never sabotaged anyone’s food, but I know it goes on.

    It’s not your mom’s cooking. You shouldn’t worry about hurting a professional chef’s feelings so much. Yes, they take pride in their work, or at least I hope they do, but it’s still a business and they know sometimes things get screwed up. Just be polite about it and don’t cop a snobby attitude. Servers deal with enough assholes everyday. I’ve had friends break down and cry because of such horrible customers. I’ve never been a server for this reason. I would dump their food on their heads and walk out. That sounds kind of fun, actually.

    Tonight I went to a really crappy chain place, got a salad and the tomato slices were literally rotting. I usually just suck things up and not say anything but I figured tonight I should since I could, you know…get e-coli. i even took a picture as evidence just in case! Great news though, they took it off the bill. Lesson learned, Buffalo Wild Wings is a terrible place to eat.

    I never send food back for the same reasons. One time on vacation I was served a hamburger that was undercooked in the middle, but I didn’t notice as much as my mom and aunt did. Since my aunt is an event planner she knew the importance of giving a restaurant feed back so she sent it back for me (against my will). I still don’t send food back. Ever. People make mistakes and you can always go to a nearby McDonald’s afterwards if you’re still hungry! (You can tell I’ve done that before)

    I’ll send it back if I don’t like it, if it was undercooked or anything of the like . Hey, I’m paying for it aren’t I? I’m not being insensitive, just not wasteful. Surely the chefs know not everyone will like each and every meal they make. Hopefully they can handle that like a mature adult.
    I don’t know if Chrissy reads comments, but WHY would you just give your unfinished food to John? Why not box it like you do the foods you disliked? Then you can indulge a SECOND time (:

    I once bought a fancy bottle of wine from the supermarket. When i opened it and poured myself a glass, i found that there was a dead moth in the bottle and the wine had turned brown. After much nagging from my hubby (i too don’t like to complain at a restaurant, id rather just pay and eave than send anything back!), i wrote them an email to them to tell them about my misfortune with my wine and to let them know what i had found with some pictures for them to see what had happened. To my surprise i got an aggressive response back from their winemaker accusing me of putting the moth in there myself!! This then reinforced my desire to never complain about food or wine ever again!!

    I don’t send food back either. I dont mostly because if you are eating with others, it screws up the whole timing of the meal. You send something back, your dining companion feels guilty for eating, you feel guitly for sending something back, you urge them to go ahead/ plead with them not to wait their food is getting cold, it’s awkward, they are guilty by association, you’re thinking about what they are thinking, did I just cause a scene? then they finish, your new dish comes out, now theyre waiting, the talking, one of you is eating with food in your mouth. It’s a disaster.

    I have sent food back! I believe in getting my moneys worth. I absolutely love cooking and if someone told me my food was nasty, I would be bummed but I would find a way to make it better!

    HELLS YEAH I SENDS MY SHIT BACK! Not to sound ghetto, but if you expect me to pay for this “meal”, give it to me right!!!…..or atleast, aiight :S I’m just sayin *Kanye shrug* I always start to think of the show, Hell’s Kitchen when Chef cusses everyone out in the back. My dream is to be able to go back into the kitchen and snap like that on whoever it was who bothered to involve themselves with making me annoyed :/ I’m skinny, and most likely starving by the time my food arrives, so if I don’t send it back the staff is definitely gonna see a disappointed look on my face :( My husband used to work in restaurants, so whenever the food is taking forever, and the waiter say, “BE CAREFUL, THIS PLATE IS REALLY HOT!”, most likely it’s been sitting under the warmer….drying out the bloody meal…because somebody basically forgot about my skinny ass!!! So HELLS YEAH, I sends my sit back if it’s inedible :D

    My family and friends hate that I do this BUT…. I can’ t imagine wasting my time/money on something disgusting! One time I was at this one restaurant (will remain nameless) and sent back two separate dishes…. no shame! The manager and chef came to come talk (not sure if it was bc I didn’t like the food or bc I have an identical twin/men are just boys with bigger clothes) after sending back the second dish.

    Needless to say….
    Life is to short to settle for eating CRAP ;) SEND IT BACK
